Why Choose Estelworld for Laser Hair Removal?
Dual-Wavelength Candela GMax Pro
We use the Candela GMax Pro, often called the “Rolls-Royce” of laser hair removal systems. This medical-grade device features two wavelengths—Alexandrite 755nm and Nd:YAG 1064nm—in a single machine. Most clinics have only one wavelength, limiting who they can treat. Our dual-wavelength system means optimal treatment for every skin type.
Safe for All Fitzpatrick Skin Types (I–VI)
From the fairest to the darkest skin tones, we treat everyone safely. The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin types I–VI based on melanin and sun response. Our Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically designed for dark skin—including Black, Asian, Indian, and brown skin—while Alexandrite handles lighter tones with precision.
Two Convenient North London Locations
Our Dalston clinic serves Hackney, Stoke Newington, Islington, and East London. Our Edmonton clinic is ideal for clients in Enfield, Tottenham, Wood Green, and Haringey. Both locations offer easy transport links and flexible appointment times.
Experienced, Qualified Practitioners
Your safety is our priority. All treatments are performed by fully trained, insured practitioners with extensive experience in laser therapy. Every client receives a thorough consultation and patch test before treatment begins. We believe in honest advice—if laser isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you.
Candela GMax Pro — The Gold Standard in Laser Hair Removal
The Candela GentleMax Pro is the same medical-grade laser system used by Harley Street dermatology clinics and trusted worldwide. Unlike IPL salon devices or single-wavelength machines, the GMax Pro combines two complementary lasers in one.
Alexandrite 755nm for fair to medium skin. Nd:YAG 1064nm for olive, brown, and dark skin. One machine that treats everyone — safely and effectively.
Two Wavelengths. Every Skin Type.
Alexandrite 755nm — For Light Skin
The Alexandrite laser operates at a 755nm wavelength, ideal for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III (fair to medium). This shorter wavelength is highly absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, making it extremely effective on dark hair.
- Fast treatment times (large spot size)
- Effective on fine and coarse hair
- Minimal discomfort with cooling system
- Excellent results on most hair colours
Nd:YAG 1064nm — For Dark Skin
The Nd:YAG laser operates at a longer 1064nm wavelength, specifically designed for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI (olive to very dark). This wavelength penetrates deeper and bypasses skin pigmentation, targeting only the hair follicle.
- Safe for dark and Black skin
- No risk of hyperpigmentation
- Excellent for ingrown hair reduction
- Treats coarse, dense hair effectively
Laser vs IPL: Understanding the Difference
Not all hair removal technology is equal. Here’s how medical-grade laser compares to IPL (Intense Pulsed Light):
| Feature | Medical Laser (Candela GMax Pro) | IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) |
|---|---|---|
| Technology Type | Single, focused wavelength (755nm or 1064nm) | Broad-spectrum light (multiple wavelengths) |
| Precision | ✓ Precise targeting of hair follicles | ✗ Light scatters in skin |
| Safe for Dark Skin | ✓ Yes (Nd:YAG 1064nm) | ✗ Can cause burns/pigmentation |
| FDA Approval | ✓ Approved for permanent reduction | ✗ Varies by device |
| Results | ✓ 80–90% permanent reduction | Less effective, more sessions needed |
| Typical Setting | Medical clinics, dermatology practices | Beauty salons, at-home devices |
IPL is not recommended for darker skin tones. The broad-spectrum light can be absorbed by melanin in the skin (not just the hair), potentially causing burns, blistering, or hyperpigmentation. If you have brown, Black, Asian, or Indian skin, always choose a clinic with Nd:YAG laser technology.
Laser Hair Removal for All Skin Types
One of the most common concerns we hear is: “Can laser work on my skin?” The answer at Estelworld is yes. Our Candela GMax Pro treats Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI—every skin tone from the fairest to the darkest.
Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale
The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin by its response to sun exposure and melanin content. During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin type to determine the optimal wavelength and settings.
Type I
Very fair, always burns
Type II
Fair, burns easily
Type III
Medium, sometimes burns
Type IV
Olive, rarely burns
Type V
Brown, very rarely burns
Type VI
Dark brown/black, never burns
Light Skin (Types I–III)
For fair to medium skin, we use the Alexandrite 755nm wavelength. Fast, effective treatment with excellent melanin absorption. Sessions are typically quicker, and most clients see significant reduction within the first few treatments.
Dark Skin (Types IV–VI)
For olive, brown, and dark skin, we use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength. This longer wavelength safely bypasses skin pigmentation to target only the hair follicle—eliminating the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation that other technologies can cause.
Benefits for Dark Skin: Ingrown Hair Reduction
If you have darker skin, you may be especially prone to ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae) and razor bumps. Laser hair removal offers a long-term solution: by permanently reducing the hair follicle, there’s no hair left to become ingrown. Many clients with “strawberry legs” also see significant improvement. We especially welcome clients with Asian, Black, Middle Eastern, Indian, and mixed heritage backgrounds.

The Treatment Process
From your first consultation to your final session — here’s exactly what happens at Estelworld Clinic. No surprises, just results.
Free Consultation & Patch Test
Your journey begins with a free, no-obligation consultation (15–20 minutes). We’ll assess your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale, evaluate your hair, review your medical history, discuss your goals, and perform a patch test to confirm optimal settings for your skin.
Treatment Sessions (6–8 Recommended)
Before: Shave the area 24 hours prior. No waxing or plucking. Avoid sun and fake tan. Arrive with clean, dry skin — no lotions or deodorant.
During: Protective eyewear provided. The Candela GMax Pro delivers rapid pulses with built-in cooling — most describe it as a warm, snapping sensation, much less painful than waxing.
Why 6–8 sessions? Hair grows in three phases and laser only works on hair in the active anagen phase — just 20–30% at any time. Sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart catch all hair as it cycles through.
Results Timeline
| Session | Typical Hair Reduction |
|---|---|
| Sessions 1–2 | 10–20% reduction |
| Sessions 3–4 | 40–60% reduction |
| Session 6 | 70–80% reduction |
| Session 8 | 80–90% permanent reduction |
Aftercare: Avoid hot showers, saunas, and exercise for 24–48 hours. Apply SPF 30+ daily. You can shave between sessions — never wax or pluck.
Optional Maintenance Sessions
After completing your initial course, most clients need just 1–2 maintenance sessions per year. Hormonal changes and aging can activate dormant follicles over time. Maintenance sessions are quick, affordable, and booked as needed.
Who Cannot Have Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is safe for most people, but there are certain conditions where treatment is not suitable. We screen for all contraindications during your consultation.
Absolute Contraindications
Treatment is not possible if you have:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active skin infections in the treatment area
- Skin cancer or history of skin cancer in the area
- Photosensitising medications (e.g., Accutane — wait 6 months)
- Open wounds, cuts, or abrasions
- Active cold sores or herpes simplex in the area

Relative Contraindications

- Recent sun exposure or tanned skin (wait until tan fades)
- Tattoos in the treatment area (we treat around them)
- PCOS — may require more sessions and maintenance
- Diabetes — may affect healing, requires medical clearance
- Autoimmune conditions — assessed case-by-case
- Recent Botox or fillers — wait 2 weeks
- Moles in the treatment area — we avoid or cover them
Frequently Asked Questions
Laser hair removal provides permanent hair reduction, not complete permanent removal. Most clients achieve 80–90% permanent reduction after a full course of 6–8 sessions. Hormones, aging, and medical conditions (such as PCOS) can activate dormant follicles over time, which is why some clients opt for 1–2 maintenance sessions per year.
Most people describe it as a warm, snapping sensation — similar to a rubber band flicking against the skin. It’s generally less painful than waxing. The Candela GMax Pro has built-in cooling to minimise discomfort. For sensitive areas, we can provide topical numbing cream upon request.
Most people need 6–8 sessions for optimal results. Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. After your course, 1–2 maintenance sessions per year keep results optimal.
Yes — when the right laser is used. At Estelworld, we use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength, specifically designed for dark skin (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI). The longer wavelength bypasses skin pigmentation and targets only the hair follicle, preventing burns and hyperpigmentation. IPL and Alexandrite-only lasers can be dangerous for dark skin.
The Candela GMax Pro is a dual-wavelength laser system — the gold standard in laser hair removal. It combines Alexandrite 755nm for light to medium skin and Nd:YAG 1064nm for medium to very dark skin. FDA-approved, medical-grade, used in dermatology clinics worldwide.
IPL uses broad-spectrum light — less precise, scatters in skin, and is dangerous for dark skin. Found in beauty salons and home devices. Laser (Candela GMax Pro) uses a single, focused wavelength for precise targeting of hair follicles. Medical-grade, FDA-approved, safer and more effective — especially for darker skin tones.
Yes. Laser is excellent for reducing ingrown hairs and razor bumps — especially for dark skin prone to pseudofolliculitis barbae. The laser destroys the follicle permanently, so there’s no hair left to become ingrown. Many clients see significant improvement after just 2–3 sessions.
Yes. PCOS can cause excess hair growth, and laser is one of the most effective treatments available. Clients with PCOS may need additional sessions due to hormonal regrowth, and ongoing maintenance is often recommended. Many of our clients with PCOS have seen life-changing results.
Absolutely. Common areas for men include back and shoulders, chest, beard line shaping, underarms, and legs. Men’s hair is often coarser, which makes laser more effective. All consultations are confidential and professional.
Bikini Line: Hair along the edge of your underwear line only. Brazilian: Removes all hair except a small strip or triangle at the front. Hollywood: Complete removal — everything, front and back. We’ll discuss your preferences during your consultation.
