What Is Microblading?

What Is Microblading?

So what is microblading exactly? Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup that creates natural-looking eyebrows using a manual hand-held tool with ultra-fine needles. Unlike traditional eyebrow tattooing, microblading uses a precise hair-stroke technique to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin, creating individual strokes that mimic real eyebrow hairs. The result is fuller, perfectly shaped brows that look completely natural — not blocky or obviously “done.”

The treatment is ideal for anyone who wants to wake up with beautiful brows without spending time filling them in daily. Whether your eyebrows are sparse, over-plucked, asymmetrical, or affected by hair loss from alopecia or chemotherapy, microblading can restore a natural, youthful appearance. The semi-permanent nature means your brows will gradually fade over 1–3 years, allowing you to adjust the shape or colour as your preferences change.

At Estelworld Clinic, we use advanced microblading techniques and high-quality pigments to ensure your brows heal beautifully and retain their colour. Our technicians are trained in bespoke brow mapping — assessing your face shape, bone structure, and natural brow pattern to design eyebrows that suit you perfectly. Every treatment is tailored to your individual features, skin tone, and desired look.

The treatment typically takes 1.5–2 hours for your initial session, with a complimentary top-up appointment 6–8 weeks later to perfect the colour and shape. Most clients find microblading far less painful than waxing or threading — we use topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

Who Is It For?

Who Is Microblading Suitable For?

Microblading is suitable for anyone who wants fuller, more defined eyebrows without daily makeup. Here are the most common reasons clients book with us:

Sparse or Thin Eyebrows

If you have naturally sparse brows with gaps or patchy areas, microblading creates the illusion of fuller, denser eyebrows. The hair-stroke technique fills in empty spaces with individual strokes that blend seamlessly with your existing hairs. This is perfect for those who’ve always had fine brows or have noticed thinning due to ageing. Many clients tell us they’ve spent years trying pencils, powders, and gels daily — microblading gives you the freedom to wake up with perfect brows already in place.

Over-Plucked or Damaged Brows

Over-plucking in the ’90s and early 2000s has left many people with brows that won’t grow back. Microblading is the ideal solution for restoring a natural shape and density. We carefully design new brow strokes in areas where hair no longer grows, creating a balanced, youthful shape that looks like your own hair. Whether you over-tweezed years ago or recently experienced hair loss from waxing trauma, microblading can rebuild your brow line with precision.

Alopecia, Chemotherapy & Medical Hair Loss

For clients experiencing hair loss due to alopecia, chemotherapy, thyroid conditions, or PCOS, microblading offers an empowering solution. We create realistic, confidence-restoring brows that look completely natural — even up close. Our technicians understand the emotional importance of this treatment and work with sensitivity and care. Many clients find that having defined eyebrows again significantly improves how they feel about their appearance during challenging times.

Asymmetrical or Uneven Brows

Most people have slightly asymmetrical eyebrows — it’s completely normal. However, if your brows are noticeably uneven in shape, height, or thickness, microblading can create balance and symmetry. During your consultation, we’ll map out both brows to ensure they’re proportionate and harmonious with your facial features. The result is brows that frame your face beautifully, with each side complementing the other.

The Process

What to Expect: The Microblading Process

The microblading process at Estelworld takes approximately 1.5–2 hours from consultation to completion. Here’s exactly what happens at each stage:

1

Free Consultation & Patch Test

Your microblading journey begins with a complimentary consultation at our Dalston or Edmonton clinic. During this 20–30 minute session, we’ll discuss your brow goals, assess your natural brow pattern, and evaluate your skin type to ensure microblading is the right choice for you.

  • Review your medical history for any contraindications
  • Assess your skin type (dry, combination, oily, sensitive, mature)
  • Discuss your desired brow shape, thickness, and colour
  • Explain realistic expectations for fading and longevity
  • Perform a patch test if you have sensitive skin or allergy concerns
  • Answer all your questions honestly — we’ll never pressure you to book
2

Brow Design & Mapping

On the day of your treatment, we begin with precise brow mapping. Using brow pencils and measuring tools, we’ll map out your new brow shape, taking into account your bone structure, eye spacing, and facial proportions. You’ll see exactly what your brows will look like before we begin — and nothing happens until you’re 100% happy with the design.

  • Map brow shape using the golden ratio technique
  • Mark the start, arch, and tail of each brow for perfect symmetry
  • Choose your pigment colour — custom blended to match your hair and skin tone
  • Adjust the thickness and shape based on your feedback
  • Get your final approval before proceeding
3

Numbing & Treatment

Once you’ve approved the design, we apply a topical numbing cream to the brow area and let it work for 15–20 minutes. Most clients describe the sensation during microblading as a light scratching or mild discomfort — far less painful than waxing or threading. The treatment itself takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, during which our technician meticulously creates individual hair strokes using a sterile, disposable blade. Each stroke is placed strategically to mimic the direction and pattern of natural brow growth, resulting in brows that look completely authentic.

4

Healing & Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, your brows will appear darker and more defined than the final result — this is normal. Over the next 10–14 days, the brows will go through a healing process involving slight scabbing and flaking. It’s essential not to scratch or pick at the area, as this can affect pigment retention. We’ll provide you with a complete aftercare kit including healing balm and detailed instructions.

5

Free 6–8 Week Top-Up Session

Your complimentary perfecting session takes place 6–8 weeks after your initial treatment, once your skin has fully healed and the true colour has settled. This appointment allows us to assess how your skin has retained the pigment and add any additional strokes where needed. We’ll refine the shape, add density to any areas that healed lighter, and ensure your brows are absolutely perfect. This top-up is essential for achieving the best long-term results and is included free in your £399 package — most clinics charge £100–£150 for this session.

Healing Timeline

The Healing Process: What to Expect

The healing process after microblading takes 4–6 weeks from start to finish. Here’s what your brows will look like at each stage:

Days 1–3

Dark and bold. Brows appear 30–50% darker than the final result. Slight redness is normal. Apply healing balm 2–3 times daily. Keep brows dry — no water, cleansers, or makeup.

Days 4–7

Scabbing begins. Light flaking as skin heals. Do NOT pick or scratch — this removes pigment. Let flakes fall off naturally. Continue healing balm. No swimming, saunas, or intense exercise.

Days 7–14

Pigment softens. Brows appear much lighter — the “ghosting phase.” This is normal. The true colour is still beneath a thin layer of new skin and will resurface over the coming weeks.

Weeks 4–6

True colour emerges. Brows are fully healed. Final colour and shape visible. Some areas may have faded more than others — this is why the 6–8 week top-up is essential.

Aftercare Rules for Best Results:

Keep brows dry for 7–10 days. No makeup on brows for 14 days. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and swimming for 4 weeks. No saunas or intense exercise for 2 weeks. Don’t apply retinol, AHAs, or exfoliating products on brows for 4 weeks. Apply healing balm 2–3 times daily for the first week. Sleep on your back if possible. No threading, waxing, or tinting for 4 weeks. Use SPF on brows when in the sun to prevent premature fading.

FAQs

Microblading FAQs

How long does microblading last?

Microblading typically lasts 1–3 years, depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. Clients with dry or normal skin tend to see results lasting closer to 2–3 years, whilst those with oily skin may find pigment fades faster (12–18 months). Factors that affect longevity include sun exposure, use of exfoliating skincare products, swimming in chlorinated water, and how oily your skin is. We recommend annual or bi-annual touch-ups to maintain the colour and shape.

Does microblading hurt?

Most clients describe microblading as a scratching sensation rather than pain. We apply topical numbing cream before treatment, which makes the procedure quite comfortable — many people say it’s less painful than eyebrow threading or waxing. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but the sensation is generally very tolerable. Once the numbing takes full effect, most clients relax and some even fall asleep during treatment.

How much does microblading cost in London?

Microblading costs in London range from £200–£800+ depending on the clinic, location, and artist’s experience. Budget salons may charge £200–£300 but often use less experienced technicians. At Estelworld, microblading is £399 with a free 6–8 week top-up included — most competitors charge separately for that essential perfecting session (£100–£150 extra). Premium clinics in Knightsbridge or Harley Street charge £500–£800+.

What’s the difference between microblading and eyebrow tattooing?

Microblading uses a manual hand-held tool to create fine, individual hair strokes in the upper layers of skin. It’s semi-permanent (lasts 1–3 years) and fades naturally. Eyebrow tattooing uses a machine to implant ink much deeper into the dermis, creating a solid, filled-in look that’s permanent. Tattoos often fade to unnatural colours like grey or blue over 5–10 years. Microblading creates a far more natural, realistic result.

Is microblading suitable for oily skin?

Microblading can be performed on oily skin, but results may not last as long and the hair strokes can blur slightly as oil breaks down the pigment. For clients with very oily skin, we often recommend powder brows or nano brows instead — these techniques hold better on oily skin and provide longer-lasting results. During your free consultation, we’ll assess your skin type and recommend the best technique for your individual needs.

Can I have microblading if I have alopecia?

Yes. Microblading is an excellent solution for clients with alopecia who have lost their eyebrow hair. The treatment creates realistic hair strokes that look completely natural, even up close. Many of our clients with alopecia find that having defined eyebrows again significantly boosts their confidence. If you have no existing brow hairs at all, we may recommend a combination technique (microblading plus light shading) for the most natural-looking result.

Why do my brows look so dark after microblading?

Your brows will appear 30–50% darker immediately after treatment because the pigment sits on the surface of the skin before settling into the dermis layer. This is completely normal. The colour will lighten significantly during healing as the top layer of skin naturally exfoliates. By day 10–14, the brows will look much softer. The true final colour emerges around week 4–6. We always select pigment with this in mind, choosing a slightly darker shade initially to achieve the perfect healed result.

Can I have microblading if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We do not offer microblading to pregnant or breastfeeding clients. Whilst there’s no evidence that microblading harms pregnancy, there haven’t been sufficient studies to confirm it’s completely safe. The numbing creams we use contain ingredients that aren’t recommended during pregnancy. Additionally, hormonal changes can affect how your skin retains pigment, potentially leading to unpredictable results. We recommend waiting until you’ve finished breastfeeding.

How should I prepare for my microblading appointment?

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, as it thins the blood. Don’t consume caffeine on the day. Stop using retinol and AHAs on your brow area 2 weeks before. Avoid eyebrow waxing or threading for 3 days before. Arrive with a clean face — no makeup on your brows. If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses. Get good sleep the night before and stay well-hydrated to support optimal healing.

Is there a microblading clinic near Shoreditch or Hackney?

Yes — our Dalston clinic is perfectly located for clients in Shoreditch, Hackney, Brick Lane, Hoxton, and throughout East London. We’re just a 3-minute walk from Dalston Junction Overground station at 40 Stoke Newington Road, London N16 7XJ. The clinic is easily accessible by public transport and is a short walk or cycle from Shoreditch, Hackney Central, and London Fields. For clients in North London, our Edmonton clinic serves Enfield, Tottenham, Wood Green, and Palmers Green.

Is microblading safe for dark skin tones?

Yes. Microblading is suitable for all skin tones, including dark and Black skin. The key is choosing the right pigment shade to complement your natural skin tone and existing brow hair colour. Our technicians are experienced in colour theory and will blend custom pigments to achieve a natural result. Just as with our laser hair removal treatments for dark skin, we understand how to work safely and effectively with melanin-rich skin.

What happens if I don’t like my microblading results?

We take every precaution to ensure you love your brows: thorough consultation, precise brow mapping, and your approval before we begin treatment. Minor adjustments can be made at your 6–8 week top-up appointment — we can modify shape, colour, or density during the perfecting session. Because microblading is semi-permanent, it will naturally fade over 12–18 months. In rare cases where removal is needed, microblading can be lightened using specialised techniques. Your satisfaction is our priority.
