Why Choose Us

Why Choose Estelworld for Laser Hair Removal?

Dual-Wavelength Candela GMax Pro

We use the Candela GMax Pro, often called the “Rolls-Royce” of laser hair removal systems. This medical-grade device features two wavelengths—Alexandrite 755nm and Nd:YAG 1064nm—in a single machine. Most clinics have only one wavelength, limiting who they can treat. Our dual-wavelength system means optimal treatment for every skin type.

Safe for All Fitzpatrick Skin Types (I–VI)

From the fairest to the darkest skin tones, we treat everyone safely. The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin types I–VI based on melanin and sun response. Our Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically designed for dark skin—including Black, Asian, Indian, and brown skin—while Alexandrite handles lighter tones with precision.

Two Convenient North London Locations

Our Dalston clinic serves Hackney, Stoke Newington, Islington, and East London. Our Edmonton clinic is ideal for clients in Enfield, Tottenham, Wood Green, and Haringey. Both locations offer easy transport links and flexible appointment times—making laser hair removal in North London accessible to everyone.

Experienced, Qualified Practitioners

Your safety is our priority. All treatments are performed by fully trained, insured practitioners with extensive experience in laser therapy. Every client receives a thorough consultation and patch test before treatment begins. We believe in honest advice—if laser isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you.

Our Technology

Candela GMax Pro: Dual-Wavelength Technology

The Candela GentleMax Pro (GMax Pro) is a medical-grade laser system that sets the gold standard for permanent hair reduction. Unlike IPL devices or single-wavelength lasers, the GMax Pro combines two complementary technologies in one machine—giving our practitioners the flexibility to treat all skin types with optimal results.

Alexandrite 755nm — For Light Skin

The Alexandrite laser operates at a 755nm wavelength, ideal for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III (fair to medium). This shorter wavelength is highly absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, making it extremely effective on dark hair.

  • Fast treatment times (large spot size)
  • Effective on fine and coarse hair
  • Minimal discomfort with cooling system
  • Excellent results on most hair colours

Nd:YAG 1064nm — For Dark Skin

The Nd:YAG laser operates at a longer 1064nm wavelength, specifically designed for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI (olive to very dark). This wavelength penetrates deeper and bypasses skin pigmentation, targeting only the hair follicle.

  • Safe for dark and Black skin
  • No risk of hyperpigmentation
  • Excellent for ingrown hair reduction
  • Treats coarse, dense hair effectively

Why Dual-Wavelength Matters

Many clinics can only treat certain skin types because they have a single-wavelength machine. If you have darker skin, they may turn you away—or worse, treat you with equipment that isn’t safe for your skin tone. Our dual-wavelength system eliminates this limitation. Whether you’re Fitzpatrick Type I or Type VI, we have the right wavelength for you.

The Candela GMax Pro is FDA-approved and CE-marked, meeting the highest international safety standards. This is medical-grade equipment used in dermatology practices and laser clinics worldwide—not to be confused with salon-grade IPL or at-home devices.

Laser vs IPL: Understanding the Difference

Not all hair removal technology is equal. Here’s how medical-grade laser compares to IPL (Intense Pulsed Light):

FeatureMedical Laser (Candela GMax Pro)IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Technology TypeSingle, focused wavelength (755nm or 1064nm)Broad-spectrum light (multiple wavelengths)
Precision Precise targeting of hair follicles Light scatters in skin
Safe for Dark Skin Yes (Nd:YAG 1064nm) Can cause burns/pigmentation
FDA Approval Approved for permanent reduction Varies by device
Results 80–90% permanent reductionLess effective, more sessions needed
Typical SettingMedical clinics, dermatology practicesBeauty salons, at-home devices
Important for Dark Skin:

IPL is not recommended for darker skin tones. The broad-spectrum light can be absorbed by melanin in the skin (not just the hair), potentially causing burns, blistering, or hyperpigmentation. If you have brown, Black, Asian, or Indian skin, always choose a clinic with Nd:YAG laser technology.

Inclusive Treatment

Laser Hair Removal for All Skin Types

One of the most common concerns we hear is: “Can laser work on my skin?” The answer at Estelworld is yes. Our Candela GMax Pro treats Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI—every skin tone from the fairest to the darkest.

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin by its response to sun exposure and melanin content. During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin type to determine the optimal wavelength and settings.

Type I

Very fair, always burns

Type II

Fair, burns easily

Type III

Medium, sometimes burns

Type IV

Olive, rarely burns

Type V

Brown, very rarely burns

Type VI

Dark brown/black, never burns

Light Skin (Types I–III)

For fair to medium skin, we use the Alexandrite 755nm wavelength. This delivers fast, effective treatment with excellent melanin absorption. Sessions are typically quicker, and most clients see significant reduction within the first few treatments.

Dark Skin (Types IV–VI)

For olive, brown, and dark skin, we use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength. This longer wavelength safely bypasses skin pigmentation to target only the hair follicle—eliminating the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation that other technologies can cause.

Benefits for Dark Skin: Ingrown Hair Reduction

If you have darker skin, you may be especially prone to ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae) and razor bumps. These occur when shaved or waxed hairs curl back into the skin, causing inflammation, bumps, and sometimes scarring. Laser hair removal offers a long-term solution: by permanently reducing the hair follicle, there’s no hair left to become ingrown.

Many clients with concerns about “strawberry legs” (dark spots from hair follicles) also see significant improvement after laser treatment. The Nd:YAG wavelength doesn’t just remove hair—it helps improve overall skin texture and appearance.

We especially welcome clients with Asian skin, Black skin, Middle Eastern skin, Indian skin, and mixed heritage backgrounds.

What to Expect

What to Expect: The Treatment Process

From your first consultation to your final session, here’s exactly what happens during your laser hair removal journey at Estelworld Clinic. We believe in transparency—no surprises, just results.

1

Free Consultation & Patch Test

Your journey begins with a free, no-obligation consultation (15–20 minutes). During this session, we’ll:

  • Assess your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale (I–VI)
  • Evaluate your hair type, colour, and growth patterns
  • Review your medical history for any contraindications
  • Discuss which areas you want treated and your goals
  • Explain the process, expected results, and realistic timelines
  • Answer all your questions honestly

If you’re ready to proceed, we’ll perform a patch test—a small test area to check how your skin responds to the laser. This ensures we use the optimal settings for your skin type.

2

Treatment Sessions (6–8 Recommended)

Before Your Appointment:

  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before (do NOT wax, pluck, or thread)
  • Avoid sun exposure and fake tan for 2–4 weeks before
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin—no lotions, deodorant, makeup, or perfume on the area
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

During Treatment:

  • You’ll wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes
  • Cooling gel may be applied to the skin
  • The laser delivers rapid pulses—most describe it as a warm, snapping sensation (much less painful than waxing)
  • Treatment time varies: 5–10 minutes for upper lip, up to 60 minutes for full legs
  • The Candela GMax Pro has built-in cooling to minimise discomfort

Why 6–8 Sessions? Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Laser only destroys hair in the active anagen phase—and only 20–30% of hair is in this phase at any given time. Multiple sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, catch all hair as it cycles through the growth phases.

3

Results Timeline & Aftercare

Results are progressive. Here’s what to expect as you move through your treatment course:

SessionTypical Hair Reduction
Sessions 1–210–20% reduction
Sessions 3–440–60% reduction
Session 670–80% reduction
Session 880–90% permanent reduction

After each session, treated hair will shed naturally over 1–2 weeks. The remaining hair will grow back finer and sparser with each session until you achieve your desired result.

Aftercare essentials: Avoid hot showers, saunas, and exercise for 24–48 hours. Apply SPF 30+ daily. Moisturise regularly. You can shave between sessions—never wax or pluck.

4

Optional Maintenance Sessions

After completing your initial course, most clients need just 1–2 maintenance sessions per year. Hormonal changes, aging, and conditions like PCOS can activate dormant follicles over time. Maintenance sessions are quick, affordable, and keep your results looking their best. They’re booked as needed—no required packages.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal provides permanent hair reduction, not complete permanent removal. Most clients achieve 80–90% permanent reduction after completing a full course of 6–8 sessions—meaning the vast majority of hair in the treated area will not grow back.

However, hormones, aging, and medical conditions (such as PCOS) can activate dormant hair follicles over time. This is why some clients opt for occasional maintenance sessions—typically 1–2 per year. The FDA classifies laser as “permanent reduction,” while only electrolysis is classified as “permanent removal” (though electrolysis treats one hair at a time and is far slower).

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as a warm, snapping sensation—similar to a rubber band flicking against the skin. It’s generally less painful than waxing because there’s no pulling involved.

Pain levels vary by treatment area (sensitive areas like bikini and underarms may feel more intense), skin type (the Nd:YAG laser used for dark skin is often more comfortable), and individual tolerance. The Candela GMax Pro has built-in cooling to minimise discomfort. For highly sensitive areas, we can provide topical numbing cream upon request.

How many sessions do I need?

Most people need 6–8 sessions for optimal results (80–90% permanent reduction). Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Laser only works on hair in the anagen phase—just 20–30% of hair at any time.

Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Timing varies by area: face every 4 weeks, underarms/bikini every 4–6 weeks, and legs/back/chest every 6–8 weeks. After your course, 1–2 maintenance sessions per year keep results optimal.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

Yes—when the right laser is used. At Estelworld, we use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength, specifically designed for dark skin (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI, including Black, Asian, Indian, and brown skin).

The longer 1064nm wavelength penetrates deeper and bypasses skin pigmentation, targeting only the hair follicle. This prevents skin damage and eliminates the risk of hyperpigmentation.

Warning: IPL and Alexandrite-only lasers can be dangerous for dark skin, potentially causing burns or pigmentation changes. Our dual-wavelength Candela GMax Pro has both wavelengths, so we safely treat everyone from the fairest to the darkest skin.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Costs vary by treatment area and package size. Small areas (upper lip, chin, underarms) start from £12 per session. Medium areas (bikini, Brazilian, Hollywood) and large areas (legs, back, arms) are priced accordingly.

Courses of 6 or 8 sessions offer 10–15% savings compared to single sessions. See our full pricing table above or contact us for a personalised quote.

What is the Candela GMax Pro?

The Candela GMax Pro (also known as GentleMax Pro) is a dual-wavelength laser system—widely considered the gold standard in laser hair removal. It combines two lasers in one machine: Alexandrite 755nm for light to medium skin and Nd:YAG 1064nm for medium to very dark skin.

This dual-wavelength capability means we treat all skin types safely and effectively—something most clinics can’t offer. The Candela GMax Pro is FDA-approved, medical-grade, and used in dermatology clinics worldwide.

Can I have laser hair removal if I’m pregnant?

No, we do not perform laser hair removal on pregnant or breastfeeding clients. While there’s no evidence that laser harms pregnancy, there haven’t been enough studies to confirm it’s 100% safe. As a precaution, we recommend waiting until after you’ve finished breastfeeding. Your consultation and treatment will be available once you’re ready.

What’s the difference between IPL and laser?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses broad-spectrum light across multiple wavelengths—it’s less precise, scatters in skin, and is dangerous for dark skin. It’s often found in beauty salons and home devices.

Laser (Candela GMax Pro) uses a single, focused wavelength (755nm or 1064nm) for precise targeting of hair follicles. It’s medical-grade, FDA-approved, safe for all skin types, and achieves better, longer-lasting results. Laser is safer, more effective, and worth the investment—especially for darker skin tones.

Can I have laser over tattoos?

No, we cannot treat directly over tattoos. The laser targets pigment (melanin) in hair, but it can also absorb tattoo ink, potentially causing burns or fading. However, we can treat the skin around the tattoo. If you have a small tattoo in the treatment area, we’ll carefully avoid it.

Does laser work on blonde or grey hair?

Laser works by targeting melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. Blonde hair has low melanin, so results are limited (dark blonde may respond). Red/ginger hair has very low melanin with minimal effectiveness. Grey/white hair has no melanin, so laser doesn’t work. For light-coloured hair, electrolysis is the alternative. During your free consultation, we’ll honestly assess whether your hair colour is suitable.

How do I prepare for my first session?

24–48 hours before: Shave the treatment area (do NOT wax, pluck, or thread). Avoid sun and fake tan. On the day: Arrive with clean, dry skin—no lotions, makeup, deodorant, or perfume on the area. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. 2–4 weeks before first session: Stop waxing, plucking, or threading. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds. We’ll give you a full preparation checklist when you book.

Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs?

Yes! Laser hair removal is excellent for reducing ingrown hairs, especially for dark skin prone to razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae). The laser destroys the hair follicle permanently—no follicle means no hair to become ingrown. It also reduces inflammation and scarring. Best areas for ingrown improvement: bikini/Brazilian, men’s beard/neck, underarms, and legs (especially “strawberry legs”). Many clients see significant improvement after just 2–3 sessions.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have PCOS?

Yes. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause excess hair growth (hirsutism), and laser hair removal is one of the most effective treatments available. Clients with PCOS may need additional sessions due to hormonal hair regrowth, and ongoing maintenance sessions are often recommended. Many of our clients with PCOS have seen life-changing results.

Can men have laser hair removal?

Absolutely! Laser hair removal is very popular with men. Common areas include back and shoulders (most popular), chest and abdomen, beard line shaping, underarms, legs (popular with athletes/swimmers), and intimate areas (male Brazilian is increasingly common). Men’s hair is often coarser, which actually makes laser more effective. All consultations are confidential and professional.

What’s the difference between Hollywood, Brazilian, and Bikini?

Bikini Line: Hair along the edge of your underwear/bikini line only—just tidies the visible edges. Brazilian: Removes all hair from the intimate area except a small strip or triangle at the front. Back area fully removed. Hollywood: Complete removal—everything, front and back. All three are popular treatments and we’ll discuss your preferences during your consultation.
